DEAR WOMEN

You have been silenced for ages.

Viewed as a threat to all; from kings to sages.

Succubus, Nymphs or Sirens

Antagonised in several legends.

Taught to never be too emotional

Lest you be labelled hysterical.

Neither should you shout out loud,

Just smile and shut your mouth.

Bring your head down from up above the clouds,

And dare do not be needy;

Are you meaning to be greedy?

Forbidden from claiming that what is rightfully yours;

Return back to the kitchen and finish the daily chores.

And never ever be curious and invent something new

For you shall be accused of witchcraft and voodoo.

Puff some arsenic and smash some lead,

And you will be the prettiest maid.

From Joan of Arc to Marie Antoinette

They all met with the same unfortunate fate.

You better not protest,

For remember Poseidon earns respect

While Medusa, they detest.

Alauddin Khalji failed to control his desire,

But Queen Padmini burned in the pyre.

Do not demand your claim,

For remember what happened in Salem.

Too plump, too skinny, too dark or perhaps a little pale;

Whatever be the test of Beauty, you are bound to fail.

You ought to be tough, but not too rough

Because you will never be enough.

But can they really chain you down

And snatch away your crown?

Let your hair remain messy,

Like the waves in the ocean

Let them grow unhindered like the branches of ivy.

Soar your wings and aim to fly,

You most certainly can if you try.

Let your creativity flow free

Like the blood running in your veins

Or like the mare galloping past those tall trees.

The freckles on your face; let them shine

Like the constellations in the sky, looking divine.

Those marks on your skin,

Stretch like rivers marking your reign.

Dance, sing, scream

And dare to dream;

For remember, how you came

From all the Witches that they failed to tame.

I plead forgiveness for adding a picture of myself, because nobody else would model for me.
